Heatwave Drives Local Storm Eruptions
On Saturday, forecasters warned of heat thunderstorms between 15:00 and 21:00 in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and East_Tyrol. With temperatures soaring to 34–39°C, the combination of scorching sunshine and humid subtropical air created ideal conditions for sudden, localized storms over the mountains.
These cells brought intense rainfall, brief storm-force gusts, and rapid weather changes. While the storms weakened later in the evening, overnight lows remained tropical, ranging from 18°C to 26°C.
Sunday: Peak of the Heatwave
Sunday marks the likely peak of the current heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 34–40°C, especially in the east. A fresh thunderstorm warning is in place from 12:00 to midnight for western Austria, including Salzburg.
In the hot, energy-rich air mass, the risk of storms increases significantly from the west. Forecasters warn of:
- Heavy rainfall
- Severe gusts
- Localized flooding
Monday: Storm Threat Expands
Monday begins with blazing sunshine and temperatures again reaching up to 40°C in the Eastern Alps. But from midday onward, the storm danger spreads eastward.
Warnings now include Vorarlberg, Tyrol, East Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria.
Expected impacts:
- Starkregen (intense downpours)
- Sturmböen (storm-force winds)
- Flooding in vulnerable areas
- Possible transport disruptions
By Tuesday, the east remains mostly sunny with highs up to 38°C, while the west faces repeated thunderstorms, especially in Tyrol and East Tyrol.
Wednesday: Weather Shift Across Austria
On Wednesday, showers and thunderstorms gradually spread from west to east, reaching most regions by evening. The east and southeast stay dry longest.
As the weather front moves through:
- Winds shift to west–northwest
- Gusts strengthen along the northern Alps
- Temperatures drop significantly, ranging from 19°C in the west to 36°C in the east
