According to meteorologists of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), the weather in Austria will be very changeable in the coming week and only from Sunday afternoon until Monday the sun will shine. Temperatures will remain in the minus range, especially in the morning. Today, Friday will bring sunny weather in the south. North of the main ridge of the Alps as well as in the north and east, however, lively to strong westerly winds will ensure an interplay of dense clouds and sunny spells. While it will…

EMA gives green light for Pfizer drug Paxlovid
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has given the green light for Pfizer’s anti-CoV pill Paxlovid. The relevant EMA committee today recommended conditional approval of the drug for use in adults at risk of severe Covid 19. With the approval of paxlovid, six coronavirus drugs are now approved in the EU for different stages of the disease, said EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. More would follow in the coming weeks. The EU Commission still has to approve the approval, but that is considered a formality. According to Pfizer, the drug is…
Read MoreComplexity researcher: “In mid-February we expect the peak of the wave”.
The announcement by the federal government that next Monday the lockdown for the unvaccinated will end does not go far enough for the opposition, but also for the social partners. Complexity researcher Peter Klimek, however, believes that retaining these measures makes perfect sense. The peak of the omicron wave has not yet been reached – and thus it is not yet “time to sound the all-clear,” Klimek said on “ZiB2.” The “peak” is not expected until mid-February at the latest; only then will there be more room for maneuver. However,…
Read MorePCR test: Can an expired gargle test still be used?
The gargle tests have an expiration date. However, they can be used for longer, as Lead Horizon now explained. The supply of PCR tests in Vienna is going well: each person is allowed to get up to eight gargle tests per week free of charge at any BIPA store. However, this led to many people hoarding the gargle tests at home. However, the tests have an expiration date. So recently the question arose again and again whether expired gargle tests can still be used and whether the result is influenced.…
Read MoreEU wants to facilitate travel for vaccinated, tested and recovered persons
In the future, a valid EU Corona certificate will be more important for travel in the EU than the level of infection in the country of departure. The EU states agreed on Tuesday that from February 1 it should no longer be decisive where a trip starts – but whether a valid vaccination, test or convalescent certificate is available. This was announced by the EU countries on Tuesday. In doing so, they are largely following a proposal presented by the EU Commission two months ago. According to the agreement, in…

Biontech and Pfizer have begun their first clinical trial to evaluate a Corona vaccine specifically tailored to the Omicron variant. The study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of the vaccine candidate, the two companies announced today. The study is expected to enroll up to 1,420 subjects, who will be divided into three groups. The first group includes just over 600 people who have already received two doses of the previous vaccine between 90 and 180 days before the start of the study and will now receive one or…

A 30-year-old Syrian man in Linz was apparently able to fend off a fraud attempt just in time by becoming suspicious and hanging up on the phone. A caller had introduced herself to him as an investigator from the Federal Police and requested his data. According to police, there is currently an increase in such calls from fake investigators. The 30-year-old Syrian man from Linz received a call from a number he did not recognize on Monday. A woman with an Indian accent told him in English she was from…
Read MoreWeather forecast: Cold front brings snow to Austria again
In Austria, it will remain mostly dry on Tuesday at 8 degrees – but in just two days, a new cold front will bring back the snow. From the west, the high pressure influence increases and subsequently provides generally calm weather conditions. In the lowlands, however, an inversion weather situation will set in, which will cause partly tenacious fog and high fog fields. Only on Thursday, a cold front from the north will hit the Alps, resulting in snow, especially in the congested areas. On Tuesday, away from the Alps,…
Read MoreAustrian virologist expects booster vaccinations once a year
Virologist Dorothee Von Laer of the Medical University of Innsbruck does not believe that people will have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus every few months in the future. Rather, it is likely to be like the flu vaccination: She told the “Tiroler Tageszeitung” that she expects “regular booster vaccinations adapted to the current variant every fall, once more than 95 percent of people are immune – through infection or vaccination.” “That state will be reached when virtually all people have recovered or have been vaccinated and thus can have…
