Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, more than a quarter of a million people in the USA have died after infection with the virus. This was revealed on Wednesday evening (local time) from data at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In no other country in the world is such a high number of deaths known. Since the end of September alone, 50,000 people have died.
The USA is at a “dangerous point” in the pandemic, Admiral Brett Giroir, who is a member of the Corona working group in the White House, told MSNBC on Wednesday. “At the moment we are seeing the biggest increase in case numbers, our hospital admissions are increasing by 25 percent week after week, our deaths are increasing by 25 percent week after week – and this is not moving in the right direction.
This is not false alarmism, the health official stressed. The rate of increase in corona cases had never been so bad at any other time during the pandemic. The number of new corona infections per day in the USA is at a very high level. Since the beginning of November, more than 100,000 new infections have been reported daily. On Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced 164,382 new coronavirus infections and 1,602 additional deaths.
