According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the war in the country began. Among them were more than 112,000 citizens of third countries, the UN agency announced on its website.
On Wednesday alone, 117,600 people had crossed the border into Poland, the Polish border guard announced on Twitter on Thursday. In the meantime, the number is decreasing. A spokeswoman for the authority said of the situation on Thursday: “By 7.00 a.m. today, there were 35 percent fewer than on Wednesday morning.” She said clearance at all border crossings for pedestrians and motorists was running smoothly.
The Border Guard also announced that 141,000 people had left Poland for Ukraine since the war. The majority of them were Ukrainians who returned to their homeland. About 12,000 Poles who crossed the border to the east mainly wanted to bring humanitarian aid.
Meanwhile, the number of Ukrainian war refugees arriving in Germany rises steadily. According to a spokesperson of the Ministry of the Interior, the German Federal Police registered 95,913 people from Ukraine from the start of the war a fortnight ago until Thursday morning. This means that the number has increased by almost 15,900 since Wednesday, but the actual number could “already be considerably higher, “the spokesperson explained. There are increased controls by the federal police but no fixed border controls.
Austria has also become a recipient or transit country for Ukrainian refugees. Ukraine – the largest country in Europe in terms of area – had more than 44 million inhabitants before the Russian attack.
